Remotes Access and Working from Home.

Remote access to company data and resources is becoming more prevalent in the world of small business. Business owners and employees in management positions are not the only people to benefit from having remote access these days. All employees can make use of having remote access to business data.

The term “Remote Access” can include several different technologies. Email is probably the most common resource to have access to outside of the office, but with the correct hardware in place, you can have full access to all of your files, applications, email, and printers. Microsoft Terminal Server gives you access to all of this. When you connect to a Terminal Server you are given your own unique session to control. This session looks to you like a whole other computer running inside of a window on your local PC. It lets you run programs and edit files just as if you were sitting at a computer located inside the office. From thiswindow you can send and receive email, and print documents to either a printer in the office or a printer that is attached to the PC you are using to connect to the remote session.

The best part is that all computers running Windows XP or Vista already contain the software that allows you to connect to a Terminal Server. As long as you are connected to the internet you will be able to connect to your Terminal Server.

Another technology that Microsoft makes available is Exchange Server. With Exchange server you are given the ability to use any PC with a web browser to connect and manage your email. To access your email this way, you simply enter a URL address into the web browser. When the page opens it prompts you for your login information, and then you enter an interface that looks very similar to Microsoft Outlook. From here you have full control over your email, calendar, contacts, and tasks.

To take it one step farther if you have a cellular phone that runs Windows Mobile 5/6, you can have it constantly stay synchronized with the Exchange server. This keeps your cell phone up to date with your email, contacts, calendar, and tasks.
